5 Key Principles in the Bible to Restore Health

“It may or may not get worse, but it won’t get better.”

That’s what the doctors at both a Des Moines hospital and Mayo Clinic said to me. I left Mayo Clinic at rock bottom! You see, my husband and I had a deep desire to start a family. We dreamed of having multiple children to care for and love, but both my husband and I knew, at that point in my life, I wouldn’t be able to safely take care of a child.

I had dealt with health problems for years and they continually, progressively worsened. My body ached; infections plagued me; my cardiovascular system was stressed; and regular, spontaneous dizzy spells from Meniere’s disease were making it impossible for me to function normally. I was scared and didn’t know what to do about it.

Fast forward to the car ride home from Mayo Clinic. As I sat defeated in the front seat, my husband turned to me and said, “Bobbi, God created you. Don’t you think He can heal you?” I believed God had the power to heal me but wondered if God was using these ailments for His glory. I was willing! Little did I know that God WOULD heal me. Not only would He heal me, but He would use my story to help many others to walk in divine health also. Praise the Lord! He is a God who heals!

There are two types of physical healing talked about in the Bible. The first is an “Iaomai” healing. An “Iaomai” healing happens when God heals instantaneously. An example of an “Iaomai” healing is in Acts 9:34 (NASB) when Peter said, “Aeneus, Jesus Christ heals you; get up and make your bed.” Immediately he got up. The second is “Therapeuo” healing. In a “Therapeuo” healing, God gives us wisdom and teaches us what we need to do to be healed. Luke 5:15 gives us an example of a “Therapeuo” healing when he heals the people in a large crowd of their sicknesses. Sometimes “Therapeuo” healings are instantaneous; other times they are not.

In my case, I experienced a “Therapeuo” healing. I wasn’t healed instantly and it wasn’t easy, but as I started following principles found in the Bible, my aches went away, my energy returned, the dizzy spells vanished and my body started to thrive in great health! It was a miracle!

I’ve discovered that no matter the diagnosis, our bodies were created with a few basic needs. These are the principles that made a difference for me and so many other people that I have had the opportunity to work with.

Principle 1: Commune with God

Matthew 6:33 But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness and all these things will be added to you. (NASB)

You have a Father in Heaven who created the world, parted the seas, overcame death and made you. He is all-powerful, all-knowing and He loves you very much!

James 1:5 But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. (NASB)

Maybe you are sick, scared and don’t know how to fix it. Ask the One who does! He wants to help you!

  • Pray
  • Fast (when appropriate)
  • Seek answers in His word
  • Learn from others who have studied what the Bible says about health and wellness
  • Worship and serve God

Exodus 23:25 But you shall serve the LORD your God, and He will bless your bread and your water, and I will remove sickness from your midst. (NASB)

Principle 2: Remove Toxins

Romans 12:1 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual act of worship. (NASB)

If you treat a burn but keep your hand on the flame, will you ever heal? The same is true for any other health challenge. Often ailments are rooted in poisons that are put in and on our bodies. If we don’t remove these poisons, we’ll never reach our full potential!

Take your hand off the flame!

Look at labels! Toxins are hiding in shampoos, soaps, lotions, makeup, air fresheners, water, food, and even clothing. Often, those toxins are the flame making it very difficult for your body to heal itself.

It was when I ditched contaminants and switched to healthy products that I started to thrive! My husband and I wasted a lot of time and money trying products that may or may not have been effective. It took years to find products that we really loved, but when we did there was no turning back.

Principle 3: Nourish and Hydrate your Body

Do you remember the story found in Daniel 1:6-20 when Daniel decided he would not defile himself with the king’s choice food and wine? He gave the commander a challenge to see who would be healthier at the end of 10 days based on the different diets.

12 “Please test your servants for ten days, and let us be given some vegetables to eat and water to drink. Then let our appearance be observed in your presence and the appearance of the youths who are eating the king’s choice food; and deal with your servants according to what you see.” (NASB)

The commander listened to him and went along with the test.

15 At the end of ten days their appearance seemed better and [e]they were fatter than all the youths who had been eating the king’s choice food. 16 So the overseer continued to [f]withhold their choice food and the wine they were to drink and kept giving them vegetables.” (NASB)

What we eat and drink makes a huge difference! On my journey to health, I decided that I would eat what God recommended to eat in the Bible and stay away from those He said to stay away from. Guess what? It worked!

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body. (NASB)

Principle 4: Essential Oils

James 5:14 Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him. (NASB)

The oils were the icing on the cake during my health journey. I was already healthy when I discovered oils, but the oils made it much easier for our family to strengthen our body systems, minimize toxins, and enhance our emotions. We use them daily for everything from cooking to cleaning. We take them with us everywhere in case we have an accident and need them. We can’t imagine what we would do today without them.

Ezekiel 47:12 By the river on its bank, on one side and on the other, will grow all kinds of trees for food. Their leaves will not wither and their fruit will not fail. They will bear every month because their water flows from the sanctuary, and their fruit will be for food and their leaves for healing. (NASB)

Revelation 22:2 Then he showed me a river of the water of life, clear as crystal, coming from the throne of God and of [b]the Lamb, in the middle of its street. On either side of the river was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. (NASB)

Luke 10:33-34 But a Samaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him; and when he saw him, he felt compassion, and came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; and he put him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn and took care of him.  (NASB)

Principle 5: Prime Your Emotions

Proverbs 17:22 – A joyful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit dries up the bones.

Proverbs 12:25 – Anxiety in a man’s heart ways it down, but a good word makes it glad.

What are you doing that makes you happy? Are you intentionally seeking things for which you are grateful?

  • Worship
  • Spend time in nature
  • Take time for a hobby
  • Keep a gratitude journal
  • Serve and bless the people around you

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. (NASB)

1 Peter 5:6-7 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. (NASB)

I’m happy to say that my husband and I are now the proud parents of four beautiful children. It has officially been over 16 years since my last Meniere’s attack and my entire family is thriving in good health. I still have some mild hearing loss from previous attacks; I believe that is my reminder that I serve a God who heals and is faithful.

The next time you are given no hope, turn to Jesus, ask Him for wisdom, and walk-in obedience trusting that in due time you will get your miracle too!
